Flipping the Classroom Upside Down!
Hello, dear readers!
Me and my partners in crime Buse, Elena and Berfin are here once again with a new project! This time, we designed a flipped classroom lesson based on the Simple Present Tense! The lesson includes a video and a variety of activities! We keep on making projects together and god, it really seems like we cannot get a proper rest. We were all so tired, but the results were worth it (p.s: I do hope that the score we will get will also be worth it as well!)! The designing process was fun, but also very time consuming and tiring. We began the work by preparing our lesson plan based on the ASSURE model. We then continued our work by designing the slides which were used in the video with Canva. Then, we prepared a worksheet for the students to solve on the same application again. After that, we prepared an interactive quiz with the help of Kahoot! We recorded the video with OBS Studio, used CapCut for editing and used Vocaroo for voice recording!

Now, enough of the process, let’s talk about the method instead! The Flipped Classroom method, which was first proposed by Militsa Nechkina, is an approach that literally flips the classroom upside down. Students learn at home via the help of technology and pre recorded lessons, then come to the class to participate in interactive activities. My opinion about this method is not negative, nor positive. We could probably say 50/50. I do think that this method releases some of the burdens held by teachers, but at the same time puts more burdens on their shoulders in different aspects. Designing a lesson is very hard and time consuming, and if we consider the constantly changing curriculums, it is only going to be harder to maintain. Besides, with the waning attention spans of 21st century students, it is going to be hard for them to focus on a lesson they watched at home. I see this method as no different from the online education we received in the pandemic, and speaking from a student's perspective, it is very difficult to gather your focus. On the other hand, The Flipped Classroom Method offers a generous amount of time for activities and peer interaction that might be ignored because of the narrow schedules in normal classrooms. Students have more time to use the language instead of just listening to lessons. To sum up, this method might be useful if it is done every once in a while, but definitely not everyday. Thank you so much if you read this far!
Take care and stay safe!
