Preparing AI Enhanced Corpus Based Materials!
Hello dear readers!
This is the first material assignment of this year and I am very exhausted already! Me and my dearest friends Buse, Berfin and Elena made an AI enhanced Corpus based material together, but the timing of the assignment was...Not very well thought and student friendly, to say the least. We made a lesson plan, which you can check by tapping here, and a four page digital worksheet, which you can access by tapping here! We made the worksheet via Canva, prepared the lesson plan with Google Docs! Now, let's talk about the contents of the material, and discuss about its effectiveness! The material was created according to the ASSURE and DDL (Data Driven Learning) education models! The ASSURE model is basically an educative method that helps teachers choose materials and adapt lesson plans successfully according to the features of the class they are working with. Meanwhile DDL encourages students to discover the subject themselves, treating language like data. The material was prepared to check the students' background knowledge first, then to push them to search and discover the knowledge they need, and lastly, putting the newfound knowldge to test. The worksheet is based on this student book which is aimed for the preparatory year students. We focused specifically on the topics School/Classroom Life and Life in the World. Our objectives were to make students discover the different uses of mustn't and don't have to, encourage them them notice their differenes and understand the different meanings conveyed in sentences which incluse mustn't and don't have to. For students to make the discovery, the SKELL Corpus is implemented into the lesson. Then, ChatGPT access is provided to them so they can get feedback on their comprehension. I will not give too much spoilers on the assignment, you must definitely check it yourself! I will now talk about whether if i find this activity effective. In my opinion, the usage of corpus would be a bit confusing for students, but I would encourage it since it offers authentic data and drives students to inspect, deduce and discover the language themselves! As for ChatGPT, I cannot say the same. As a future teacher, I am thinking of prohibiting the usage of AI already, yes, even for feedback. It prevents students from doing crictical thinking and pulls them away discovery and research. Pretty ironic that a 21st century technological advancement is the one that actively distances students from learning 21st century learning skills, am I right? I do not even want to talk about the horrifying impact AI has in our nature or in our privacy, because if I do, this post will turn into an essay with a 33.550.336 word count. Beside that, why would someone use AI while the teacher or their classmates are right there to provide them effective feedback? To sum it up, I think the usage of Corpus must be encouraged in education for its countless benefits. It should definitely be used more and adapted into more lesson plans. Thank you so much for reading this far!
Take care and stay safe!
